Licensed To Ill The Beastie Boys
The joke of Licensed to Ill's cover--that the Beasties could crash their jet into the side of a mountain and keep on tickin'--serves as a good metaphor for a career that even some of their 1986 admirers thought might be over after the one-time-only shock of this full-length debut. That thousands of funk-junkie wannabes have since failed at re-creating its groove, breaking-the-law vibe, and ear-splitting... |
 A South Bronx Story ESG
ESG occupy a very individual place in the musical no man's land between new wave (read no wave) punk and alternative '80s dance culture. They simultaneously represent and reflect the time (late '70s early '80s) and place (NYC) from whence they came--a time of musical and cultural collision, fusion and crossover. The all-female group inadvertently established themselves as antecedents to house with... |
 Ghetto Style Gil Scott-Heron
This is a fantastic little compliation and a great starting place to the music of Gil Scott-Heron.
It's got bar one song, the whole 'Pieces of a Man' album on it plus a few other little things which are ok.
so you do the maths.... |
Hip Hop Sessions: Classics from Hip Hop's Holy Grail Various Artists
Yet another superb collection from the Sessions people. Smooth grooves from Tone Loc, Def Jef and Spoonie Gee mixed with harder numbers from KRS-One, Ultramagnetics etc. An excellent compilation of premier cuts from the Golden Age of Hip Hop. Worth buying alone for JVC Force's Strong Island. When the stores are full of tired Old School compilations do yourself a favour and buy this instead. Great... |
 All World LL Cool J
LL Cool J is a Hip Hop legend, on Def Jam Records one of the most legendary Hip Hop labels. All World is a collection of some of his biggest and best hits from his first six albums and it doesn't fail to disappoint. You can really see how LL's style has changed over the years from the raw basic beats of the opening 'I Can't Live Without My Radio', to the hilarious 'Big Ole Butt', through to the slicker... |
 Re Entry Marley Marl
First off, Marley Marl is up there on my list of favorite producers/beatmakers-- along with the Rza, DJ Premiere, Dr. Dre, and Pete Rock. However, the material on this album is hardly fitting for its title. To make a true "Re-Entry" into the Hip-Hop world, you have to come correct and without flaws... ESPECIALLY if you are a pioneer! Though I have my share of favorite tracks on this release, it's... |
 Spirits Gil Scott-Heron
The other reviewers didn't mention it, but the title track - "Spirits" - is one of the album's best. The liner notes mention that John Coltrane is sampled, but the chords are reminiscent of Alice Coltrane's "Blue Nile." Really beautiful album. | |
